let’s see all the Radiohead fan boys/girls
fact. whenever I hear people saying anything along the lines of:
“omg Radiohead is the best band ever” / “no other band has gotten close to the talent that Radiohead has accomplished” / “Radiohead is the best band ever”
they’re average. they’re like a combination of if you took two mediocre bands and combined them and made them sound ‘decent’, that’s Radiohead, in my opinion.
Haters gon’ hate.
You can’t really state opinion as fact, sorry. But I suppose they’re not a band for everyone. If you’re looking for an uproar to be thrown your way so you can express a certain superiority for holding an unpopular opinion, that ain’t happenin’! Radiohead have introduced me to many, many different artists from all over the spectrum. I adore every Radiohead record, but there are so many other great bands I’d be missing out on if I hadn’t properly explored them. Autolux, UNKLE, Flying Lotus, Liars, Autechre, Sparklehorse, Four Tet, and Grizzly Bear, to name quite a few. All of which I actively listen to and lose myself in. I appreciate them as music-listeners just as wholeheartedly as I respect them as musicians.
So there you go, Radiohead employed a unique sense of music appreciation within me that has literally changed my life over the past five years; a time which happened to be that crucial age of self-discovery. When people tell me that they don’t understand who Radiohead are, or are quick to dismiss their music as mindless or boring, I urge them to doubt themselves. They’re missing out on too much.
I also feel that some people dislike them because it’s the “cool” thing to do. I’ve been there, I’ve had those thoughts, but I’ve long since lost that attitude. It’s toxic to hate things because others love it. Some people are too proud to admit it, even now, but it’s a phase you go through as you grow up. You rebel against popular opinion, but it’s a defense you create for yourself because you’re learning. No one wants to be told they don’t know, or they don’t understand. I look back constantly at how big of an idiot I was, but that’s simply being young.
A quick scan of your blog shows that you are a fan of Blackfield and Sigur Ros, among others, and I strongly believe that Radiohead is right up your alley. You just have to let them in. Find a nice pair of headphones, play OK Computer and Kid A back-to-back, and then tell me how you feel.
