Consequential Subordinate : Once Again

Once Again

I hate having to reiterate and risk sounding like an asshole but,

music lover ≠ hipster

I’m very exhausted from still hearing this term, and it’s only [really] young people who continue to use it. The fact that this merits a blog post makes me seem too invested in my frustration, but I really think that ‘hipster’ should be removed from common diction. It’s passive-aggressive and snobby, first off. But what’s worse is lately it’s being used to describe a piece of art that someone refuses to fully understand, rather than making a proper attempt to. This is an insult to any critic or analyst who takes pride in their work.

The Grammy awards always focus a little too heavily on pop music in my eyes, making “upsets” out of deserving award winners. This year it was Bon Iver; last year it was Arcade Fire. Both acts very deserving, both acts incredibly humble. Both acts presumably popular. But then people explode on Twitter and I have to wonder a little bit.

I had a point, and I believe it was “open your damn mind.” I entirely understand and respect people who hold a disagreeable opinion, but I do not respect those who refuse to hear otherwise. That sounds so obvious, but sometimes people don’t take the time to reverse the roles and see for themselves.

Everyone deserves a voice, but Twitter (among other social media websites) makes it so easy to share that eventually, and without even realizing, your opinion is no longer your own. It’s a hive mind mentality that I feel will be the downfall of human kindness.
